FAQs

What are CITY MODERN Home Tours?
With the launch of CITY MODERN in 2012, Dwell expanded its popular home tours to New York City. Home Tours occur over two days with each day including five modern homes in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Tours are self-guided. Docents at each home are available to answer questions and point out interesting architectural details. A home tour ticket purchase includes an invitation to the “Meet the Architects” cocktail reception for a chance to meet the brilliant design minds behind the homes featured on each tour.

I registered for a Home Tour. When will I receive my ticket?
Tickets are not mailed in advance of the event. A printed guide will be distributed at a convenient Headquarters location on the morning of your home tour. This guide will serve as your ticket and must be presented at each home.

Can I get a refund on tickets if it turns out I can’t attend?
All event ticket sales are final and non-refundable.

Can I visit the homes at my own pace or will I be part of a group?
Our weekend home-tours are self-guided. You may visit the homes at your own pace. All homes are open from 11-4pm each day. Last entry time at each home is 3:30pm.

What kind of shoes should I wear on the home tours?
We recommend that home tour participants wear comfortable walking shoes that are easy to slip on and off. You may be required to take your shoes off at homes upon entry. Disposable booties are provided at all homes for guests.

Are children able to attend the home tours?
Children ages six and above are welcome to attend the home tours with an adult. Any child attending the tour must have his or her own ticket. For insurance reasons, children under the age of six cannot attend.

Can I take photographs inside the homes on the tour?
You are welcome to take photographs inside the homes for personal use at the homeowner’s discretion. We cannot guarantee that personal-use photography will be permitted in any particular home. Professional photography equipment is not allowed on the tours at anytime.

Can I sit on furniture and look into cabinets in the home?
We ask that guests kindly respect that homes featured on the tours are private residences. Sitting on furniture, opening cabinets and closets is therefore not permitted.

Do I have to take my shoes off?
Disposable booties are provided at all homes. Some homeowners may request that guests also remove their shoes in addition to wearing booties.

Will bathrooms be available for use at the homes?
Bathrooms are not available for use at the homes on the tour. Staff at each home can provide directions to the nearest public restroom at cafes and neighboring shops.
